Our Closet Makeover Starts NOW!

I’ve always (ALWAYS) wanted to have a super organized bedroom closet. Ever since our first house, I’ve dreamed of ripping everything out and adding a really beautiful and functional storage system to my closet. This is our third house, and while I’ve tackled a wide variety of DIY projects, a full and detailed closet makeover isn’t one of them.

Sure, in our first house we added a wire closet system and did our best to deal with things on a budget. In our second house I didn’t even try. And here? Well, I’ve been working really hard to make the best of what we have. But it’s just not working because my closet still looks like this on a daily basis.

You’re welcome for that little peek at real life.

I was really hopeful that adding a dresser to our closet and trying to get creative with the systems already in place would work for us. But, the bottom line is that the organization system that the builder put in place just does not work for us. And our closet is a mess 100% of the time. And I’m tired of it.

So, I’m doing something about it!

Because life is too short to live with a closet you hate, you know?

I’ve been planning this makeover for a while now and I’m really (really!) excited to share the process with you.

What’s the plan? Let’s dive into it…

the closet makeover plan

large stack of boxes in a garage
  • We’re starting by ripping everything that’s currently there out. Everrrrrryyyyytthhiinnnnng! None of it works for us, so we’re starting fresh.
  • Once I’ve ripped everything out, I’ll give the room a fresh coat of paint. To be fully transparent, I’m undecided on what color I want to go with. Should I bring in the blue from our room? Go with a bright white? Stick with a neutral like I have now? Something completely different? I keep changing my mind. But, I’m confident once I get the space empty, I’ll be able to make a decision.
  • As you can see in the photo above, I have a whole new closet system sitting in the garage ready to go! More details on that to come, but I worked with a brand on a custom design and I think it’s going to be so much more functional than it is now.
  • Once it’s all in place and things are organized, we’ll add some finishing touches! A new light, a full-length mirror, a rug, and mayyyybe even a little ottoman in the middle so I don’t have to sit on the floor to put my shoes on. And, of course, I’ll carve out a little space for Granger’s kennel (though, it might not be as fancy as the space we made for Potter’s!).

I’m not sure I even have the words to tell you how excited I am for this closet makeover! It’s going to feel so good to finally have a system that works for us in our closet. And, I think it’s gonna look pretty great, too. Which is lovely, considering no one seems to be able to remember to close our closet door and my closet is basically always on display.

Lovely.
