New 12U fastpitch traveling softball team forming in Sterling

Girls born in 2010, 2011, or 2012 who want to play fastpitch softball now have a new opportunity. A new 12U fastpitch travel softball team based in Sterling, Team Hustle 12U – Corey, has been formed with tryouts set for Monday and Tuesday, July 11 and 12.

“We decided to take on a team as we just moved here a few months ago when I accepted the CFO position at Sterling Federal Credit Union and found that there is no opportunity here for girls who want to play at the next level. Most girls were traveling to the Front Range and also paying $2,000 to $3,000 to play for the season,” said head coach Anna May Corey.

Corey decided to form a team under the Team Hustle Organization because she and her family love what it stands for. The team will be strictly volunteer based and will only charge the cost of the uniforms, tournaments, field usage and insurance.

“We wanted to make it more affordable and we also will hold several fundraisers to offset costs,” Corey said.

Tryouts for the team will take place Monday and Tuesday, July 11 and 12, from 5 to 7 the field next to 204 E. Wilson, in Haxtun. The season will run from August 2022 until July 2023, with practices to be held in Sterling.

“We find it important to help all players on the team grow every practice and every game. It is important to not only know how to play the game but also understand the game! While it is important to be competitive, it is more important that the girls are enjoying the game as well!” states a message on the team’s Facebook page.

In August and the first week of September practice will be held two times a week, then from the second week of September until March practice will be once a week (potentially more if wanted) and from March until July the team will practice twice a week.

Even if players only want to play in the spring and summer, they will still need to try out next week as all teams are holding tryouts now for the season. For those that play fall and/or winter sports, the team will have flexibility during that time as the coaches feel multiple sports are an excellent idea for athletes.

Leading the team will be Coach Corey, who specializes in pitching and outfield. She played until she got hurt her senior year of high school. Corey was a pitcher and pitched about 65 to 70mph with five different pitches, but due to overuse obtained a career-changing injury to the shoulder that didn’t allow her to go any further. She instead started coaching youth 17 years ago and has spent countless hours researching and keeping up with the latest pitching.

She is joined by her husband, Tyler, who played college baseball until he obtained a career-ending injury to his knee. He helped create an indoor facility in Nevada and is an excellent hitting and fielding coach. He also worked as a hitting and catching instructor at a baseball/softball academy in southern California alongside former major league and minor league players. He has over 19 years of experience coaching youth players and specializes in infield, catching, baserunning and hitting.
